SHORT COMMUNICATION High capacity for extracellular acid–base regulation in the air-breathing fish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus

چکیده
The evolution of accessory air-breathing structures is typically associated with reduction of the gills, although branchial ion transport remains pivotal for acid–base and ion regulation. Therefore, airbreathing fishes are believed to have a low capacity for extracellular pH regulation during a respiratory acidosis. In the present study, we investigated acid–base regulation during hypercapnia in the airbreathing fish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus in normoxic and hypoxic water at 28–30°C. Contrary to previous studies, we show that this air-breathing fish has a pronounced ability to regulate extracellular pH (pHe) during hypercapnia, with completemetabolic compensation of pHe within 72 h of exposure to hypoxic hypercapnia with CO2 levels above 34 mmHg. The high capacity for pHe regulation relies on a pronounced ability to increase levels of HCO3 − in the plasma. Our study illustrates the diversity in thephysiologyof air-breathing fishes, such that generalizations across phylogenies may be difficult.

متن کاملHigh affinity and temperature sensitivity of blood oxygen binding in Pangasianodon hypophthalmus due to lack of chloride-hemoglobin allosteric interaction.
Air-breathing fishes represent interesting organisms in terms of understanding the physiological changes associated with the terrestrialization of vertebrates, and, further, are of great socio-economic importance for aquaculture in Southeast Asia. To understand how environmental factors, such as high temperature, affect O2 transport in air-breathing fishes, this study assessed the effects of te...
متن کاملRefined oil production from patin catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) by-products
In this study, oil was extracted from the liver and visceral fat of Patin (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) and refined. The yield of oil after refining was 49.98%. The major yield loss (34.20%) happened during the degumming procedure. Fatty acids found in the crude and refined oil were C12:0, C14:0, C14:1, C16:0, C16:1, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2, C18:3, C18:4, C20:0, C20:1, C20:4, C20:5, and C22:6. The ...
متن کاملProximate and fatty acid composition of liver and fatty tissue of patincatfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)
The visceral storage fat and liver of patin catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) are normally discarded, which incurs cost and can cause environmental pollution. However, these may be potential sources to extract fish oil. The proximate and fatty acid compositions of liver and fatty tissue of patin catfish were investigated to evaluate the suitability of these by-products for extracting fish o...
متن کاملAmbient CO2, fish behaviour and altered GABAergic neurotransmission: exploring the mechanism of CO2-altered behaviour by taking a hypercapnia dweller down to low CO2 levels.
Recent studies suggest that projected rises of aquatic CO2 levels cause acid-base regulatory responses in fishes that lead to altered GABAergic neurotransmission and disrupted behaviour, threatening fitness and population survival. It is thought that changes in Cl(-) and HCO3 (-) gradients across neural membranes interfere with the function of GABA-gated anion channels (GABAA receptors). So far...
